Tor Einar Møller

In the fall of 2016, I completed my master’s degree in multivariate analysis of chemometric data at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences in Ås (formerly the Agricultural College of Norway for all 35+ of age). Formally, I am a high school teacher in science (lektor i realfag), teaching mathematics, physics, biology and science. Apparently, this is a slightly different background from what most Ph.D. students at Geo have. Here at UiB, I will be associated with the project Unveiling the deep biosphere at the K.G. Jebsen Centre for Deep Sea Research and my supervisors will be Researchers Steffen L. Jørgensen and Bjarte Hannisdal. My main tasks will be to construct a statistical pipeline for analysing the sediment cores previously acquired, as well as to set up a data base of core analysis data to feed the pipeline. The results will, among other things, help generating realistic parameters for inverse modelling of the microbial communities in oceanic sediments. You can find me at 4F14d.

Yves Krüger

Yves Krüger –  I received a diploma in Earth Science (1995) at the University of Basel (Switzerland) with a fluid inclusion study of alpine cleft quartz, and a PhD degree (2001) at the University of Bern (Switzerland) with a thesis on the experimental determination of the ternary H2O-NaCl-CO2 phase diagram at high pressures and temperatures using synthetic fluid inclusion. From 2006 to 2014 I was working as a post-doc (assistant, senior assistant) at the Institute of Applied Physics, University of Bern. During this time I have developed a new technique to overcome metastable phase states in fluid inclusions by means of ultra-short (femtosecond) laser pulses. Using this technique, I have then developed the methodology of a new thermometer for quantitative paleo-climate reconstructions based on liquid-vapour homogenisation temperatures of fluid inclusions in stalagmites. Furthermore, we have employed the femtosecond laser technique to explore the metastable part of the water phase diagram using synthetic fluid inclusions. In 2016 and 2017 I had two short-term employments, 6 months at the Institute of Environmental Physics, University of Heidelberg (Germany) and 9 months at the Institute of Geological Sciences, University of Orléans (France). During my stay in France I conducted a Raman study to further explore the water/ ice phase diagram and I have developed a new micro-Raman setup that overcomes some of the shortcomings of commercial systems.

Since October 2017 I have a 4-years researcher position in the Quaternary Earth Systems group, working in the Frinatec-funded T-TRAC project of Nele Meckler. The ambitious goal of this project is to establish a tropical temperature record over the last 500’000 years, using stalagmites from Northern Borneo (Malaysia). To this end, I will build up and run a new fluid inclusion lab (room 2G 7e) that will be equipped with a femtosecond laser system.

Vilde Dimmen: I started studying at the University of Bergen in 2011, and finished my M.Sc. in Petroleum Geoscience here last November. My master thesis is based on field work at the Maltese Islands, where I quantified the relationship between structural complexity and fluid flow in carbonate rocks. After finishing, I wrote a paper based on the M.Sc. project, with good help from my co-authors, and now I’m ready to start on a PhD degree as a VISTA-scholar with Prof. Atle Rotevatn as project director. The project aims to document and understand the geological and geophysical properties of fault zones in carbonate rocks through structural outcrop characterization, analysis of petrophysical and geophysical rock properties, reservoir geomodelling, and seismic forward modelling. I will be part of the Basin and Reservoir Studies group, and co-supervised by Prof. Rob Gawthorpe and Assoc. Prof. Isabelle Lecomte amongst others. You can find me in Atle Rotevatn’s office (2G11a) while he’s on sabbathical.

Eric SalomonBased at the University of Mainz, Germany, I conducted my PhD thesis and a year of post-doctoral research dealing with the tectonic evolution of onshore passive margins along the South Atlantic. Focus was on the comparison of the NW Namibian and southern Brazilian margins with respect to basement inheritance on rifting and stress evolution since continental breakup.

Just now in October, I joined the BRS group of the UiB to turn my research towards the northern hemisphere. As part of the research collaboration ARCEx, which aims at understanding geology and resource potential of the Barents Sea, I will work together with Atle Rotevatn on basin-bounding fault systems cropping out at the surface. Here I will immerse in the subject of fluid circulation within these structures. Field localities will be first along the Miocene grabens within the Menderes Massif of western Turkey and then along the East Greenland rift in – well – eastern Greenland.

Christos Pennos

Christos Pennos

Christos Pennos: I completed my Ph.D. in Geology at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Greece) in 2014. The subject of my dissertation was the “Landscape evolution of Menikio Mountain (Macedonia, Greece) based on morphological and sedimentological analyses of caves”, including landscape geomorphic analysis and paleoclimatic reconstruction through speleothem records. In 2015, I received an 18 month long personal EU grant from the IKY-EEA funding scheme under the theme “Integrated Management of Sea and Inland Waters”. During this period, I worked on Maaras cave (Aggitis River springs) where, I created a 3d subsurface model, based on which I developed a speleogenetic conceptual model for its evolution in relation to the geomorphic development of the fluvial valley. Now you can find me in room 3152, 3RD floor, working as postdoctoral researcher on the FOPAK project where I will work closely with Professor S-E Lauritzen on karst/cave types/geometries, representing different tectonostratigraphic settings, in order to construct a suite of paleokarst reservoir models.

Thibaut Barreyre – I am a former graduate student at Ecole Normale Supérieure and Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris, a former Postdoctoral Scholar at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and  a former Postdoctoral Investigator at IFREMER. I am currently Adjunct Scientist at the department of Geology and Geophysics of Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, USA, and I recently joined UiB and K.G. Jebsen Centre for Deep Sea Research as a researcher in Marine Geophysics and Fluid Dynamics. My main research focuses on mid-ocean ridge processes, with special interest on the interplay between fluid flow and geological and oceanographic processes in porous media. I approach this topic through a mix of observational work (field and laboratory), data analysis, and modeling (analytical and numerical) with the aim of integrating and reconciling complex flow observations into a coherent theoretical framework. I am especially intrigued in the mechanisms that perturb –periodically or episodically– fluid flow by changing the thermal and/or stress conditions of the sub-surface crust on short time scales. You can find me in room 4102 so don’t hesitate to reach out!

Håvard Hallås Stubseid

Håvard Hallås Stubseid – I started working in the administration at GEO in September 2017, in a six months temporary position. I have just handed in the thesis for my Master`s degree in Geochemistry and Petrology, and graduated in the middle of October. My project concerned geochemical and geochronological investigation of the ophiolitic terrane in the Hardangerfjord area, in SW Norway. My tasks at GEO will concern schedules for all courses and administration of exams at the institute. I have my office in the third floor, room 3104, behind the reception.

Magnhild Sydnes: I have a background in Hydrogeology with a MSc from UiB, 2004. Since then I have worked for Environmental Resources Management (ERM, New Orleans, USA) as a Hydrogeologist on environmental related projects. Currently (2011- ) I am working for Tectonor AS where I am doing an industrial PhD in collaboration with UiB. Tectonor AS is an independent company offering specialized geological expertise to the oil and gas industry. My PhD project is related to sill intrusions and their effect on the petroleum system. It aims to answer questions regarding: -the effect of intrusions on the temperature and maturation history in sedimentary basins, -the effect of intrusions on diagenesis and the porosity development, -the effect of intrusions and diagenetic changes on fault and fracture permeability. At UiB Prof. Rolf Mjelde is my supervisor accompanied by Dr. Willy Fjeldskaar, Dr. Ivar Grunnaleite and Dr. Ingrid F. Løtveit from Tectonor.You will find Magnhild in room 2147

Helene Meling Stemland – I will start working as a PhD candidate for the ARCEx project in October. I recently finished a MSc in geophysics here at the University of Bergen, where my master thesis was written under the supervision of Tor Arne Johansen and Bent Ole Ruud. The thesis was about seismic acquisition in shallow marine sea ice covered environments. I studied the significance of survey geometry on the quality of seismic data acquired in such an environment, and also the possible impacts that seismic surveys can have on marine mammals. I also got to participate in field work on Svalbard earlier this year, where a seismic survey was performed, and found the topic so interesting that I am very happy I get to continue working on it! I am currently putting together a paper based partly on my master thesis, where I discuss the possible impacts of the field work done on Svalbard on seals. You can find me in room 2109.
